There is a common misconception surrounding the concept of sacrifice. The word immediately brings negative associations with it. Sacrificing something good and innocent for the sake of the common good; for the sake of others. But sacrifice is just a fancier, more religious word for trade: exchange.
Whilst, indeed, you can sacrifice something good and pure for the greater good. You can sacrifice something decrepit, derelict, and evil for the sake of the greater good as well. You can sacrifice something bad for something worse - if you so choose.
Sometimes the sacrifice doesn't even need to happen, but the willingness to make that sacrifice can really have a profound impact. Abraham's blade was quite close to his son before the angel stopped him and he was rewarded for his willingness to sacrifice everything that had been given to him.
Sacrifice is necessary in certain crossroads, and it is always painful. It hurts to let go of whatever it was you've been clinging on to for so long; whether that thing is good for you or not. But once you've borne that pain, agony, and despair, you make room for something else to come in. But just make sure the sacrifice was worth it.
