Where do nightmares come from? Isn't it a bit odd that your own brain would generate unpleasant imagery and emotions. Why would you do that to yourself? There has to be some reason. I certainly do not have the answer, but I can put forward a theory.

Your subconscious mind is chock-full of things you do not - well - consciously think about, but motivate you anyway. Desires, fears, hopes. Things you did not even know about yourself. And if there is a way your subconscious can tell you things about yourself you didn't previously know, it's certainly through dreams.

Nightmares are probably just a way your brain tells you what to avoid (or conquer if you're brave enough). Perhaps you should make friends with your subconscious. Carl Jung called it "integrating the shadow self". Maybe make friends with the monster under your bed, and you just might find peace.
