“Life is like music for its own sake. We are living in an eternal now, and when we listen to music we are not listening to the past, we are not listening to the future, we are listening to an expanded present.” - Alan Watts
Music, according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, can be described as vocal, instrumental, or mechanical sounds having rhythm, melody, or harmony. Surely, most of us don't require a dictionary definition to know what it is.
It makes us happy, it makes us sad, it makes us hopeful, it makes every experience feel more meaningful. I'm writing this post listening to Meditational Field by Susumu Hirasawa, and I feel like I'm changing the world, when in reality, I'm just mashing keys on a keyboard.
The power of music permeates every aspect of our lives: classical music for the old-fashioned, high-class types, folk music for lovers of tradition, metal for the rebels, and a litany of various other genres, sub-genres, and combinations thereof.
It can be argued that music can indeed have meaning, but indubitably, it's the experience that we all come back for. Just like music, I write about music simply for the love of it and nothing more. Isn't that melodious?
