Brother's Keeper

We all know the story. Cain and Abel, the first humans born of humans, were occupied with their respective careers. One a farmer, and the other a shepherd.

Both rendered sacrifice unto the Lord.

Cain rendered the crops that he did not care much about, and Abel rendered the firstborns of his flock. Both equal sacrifices, of course. Who can argue that?

Now Cain was astounded as to how his simple brother was successful in his sacrifice where he was not. Rightfully so, of course. Like is established, the firstborn of Abel's sheep was of equal value to the crops that Cain was going to dispense with anyway. So how come Abel won where Cain lost.

Cain shook his fist at the Lord, and asked him why this was so, and the Lord gave unto him an explanation that “the cat decides which milk is good”. It is not up to Cain or Abel to decide what is valuable to the Lord, it is up to the Lord. Perhaps the solution was to look within and course-correct. This cat drinks the milk of virtue. Of course, this explanation from the seemingly omniscient God made absolutely no sense, so Cain did the only rational thing he could.

After Cain had destroyed his simple brother for his crimes of cheating, we all know how the rest of the story went, of course. God saw the error in his judgement and changed his mind. “Of course! It should have been you, all along!”, God said. “Oh silly me. Thank you for making me see the errors of my ways”, and then God invited Cain to sit with him and commune for the rest of time. Amen.
